In late summer 2010 I met, well, internet met the Brooklyn band Holy Spirits through conversations started via my blog, Think or Smile. They had just released an EP around the same time I was experimenting with adding motion into my traditional collage art. My first attempt syncing these experiments to music was with a Holy Spirits song. One thing led to another and we ended up embarking on a collaboration to visualize the entire EP with the eventual goal of performing together live. After a successful Kickstarter campaign and lots of love from fellow bloggers we finally met in person the evening before our debut audio/visual performance in New York. We've since had the opportunity to tour California gaining them enough momentum to play several SXSW showcases and release their next EP on 12", which I've had to pleasure to create art for.
The motion collages themselves were all created using vintage magazine cut outs, scanned and digitally collaged together into scenes. Then animated to the music using AfterEffects. The results are subtly surreal narratives developing from repeated listens with good headphones, surrounded by magazine clippings. And lots of tea.
